Twitter Traps to Avoid for the Holidays

Twitter Traps to Avoid for the Holidays

The holidays are the most wonderful time of year for many companies. But for some, happy times can turn sour with just 140 characters. To help you keep your holiday content happy, we’ve identified three common Twitter traps and provided tips to avoid them.

Twitter Trap #1: Posting about just one holiday.

There’s no harm in calling out the best Christmas deals of the season; heck, there are some awesome promotions that correspond with Christmas! But the first Twitter trap is only recognizing Christmas during the “holiday season.” Seventy-five percent of Americans and 31 percent of the world population identifies as Christian, meaning another 15 percent in the U.S. and whopping 69 percent worldwide are being excluded in holiday claims. Make sure to invite everyone to the party and celebrate awesome traditions surrounding other faiths, like Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, which also occur during the holiday season.

Twitter Trap #2: What day is it?

Whether it’s a scheduling error or an impromptu shout out on the incorrect day, posting about a holiday on the wrong date is avoidable. When posting in the moment or ahead of time, always double check that you are in fact posting on the actual date of a popular holiday. This may seem obvious if you personally celebrate a particular holiday, but not it’s not always as easy for other ones.

Twitter Trap #3: Not showing off your employees.

Showing your company’s holiday spirit is a wonderful way to promote company culture! Even if it’s something as simple as a photo of an employee wearing an ugly Christmas sweater or a colleague bringing in festive treats, there’s probably something you can show off to the world. Company culture is more important than ever for recruiting and retention purposes. Going radio silent is a missed opportunity to present your company in a positive, lighthearted manner.

Lastly, context is everything. And as PR pros, we have to be aware of our words. So what happened when we took classic holiday song lyrics and delivered them as spoken lines rather than catchy tunes? Have a little laugh and find out what creepy Christmas songs sound like delivered by the Largemouth team.
