Three Questions to Ask Yourself if You’re Considering a Career in Public Relations

You spend approximately one-third of your work week in the office, so it is important to find something you really love to do. For me, public relations is just that. During the first few years of my career, I have discovered more about myself and what I enjoy doing. I have outlined some questions below that may help you determine if this is the right career path for you.

1. Do you enjoy working in an environment that changes every day?

If the answer is yes, then public relations is likely a good choice for you. Whether you are working internally within the marketing department of a large company, at an agency or with a non-profit, the needs of your client may change at a moment’s notice and you have to be flexible when that happens.

2. Does the thought of calling a complete stranger excite you?

If the answer is yes, then you already have a large part of what it takes to be a public relations professional. When we are working on getting our clients covered in print, broadcast or digital media you have to be personable and confident when pitching your story, whether that is on a phone call, through an email or in person.

3. If writing was a large part of your job, would you be happy?

If you answered yes to this question, you are certainly on the right path. Writing is a huge part of public relations since it is the way we share information. Whether that means writing a press release, a blog post, an email or social media posts, it takes efficiency and finesse.

These questions should provide some insight on what it takes to be a public relations professional and help you decide if you are on the right path. Feel free to contact me at jami@largemouthpr.com if you have any questions about the industry or what it’s like to work at a public relations agency.
