Wildlands educational content generates community engagement

Engaging in community education

Challenge

Stormwater infrastructure is a subtle, yet instrumental component for a blossoming city like Durham, North Carolina – which is among the fastest growing cities in the country. Largemouth was selected to develop a multi-faced communications program for Wildlands Engineering to promote a constructed wetland and stream restoration project for the city. Working in close collaboration with a video production agency, Largemouth oversaw the creative direction and development of graphics that would educate the public on the benefits of constructed wetlands.

Ideas

When communicating complex issues to the public, a central and consistent narrative is important to avoid confusion or misinformation. Largemouth crafted the central storyline for this campaign, illustrating messages to reinforce how constructed wetlands are vital to slow and filter polluted runoff  and protect downstream rivers and lakes. For the duration of the construction project, Largemouth deployed integrated communications efforts to reach residents, town staff and other local stakeholders. Programming tactics included proactive media relations, monthly social media content, infographics, and the dissemination of an educational video developed by collaborator Horizon Productions.

Impact

An educational video combined with social media postings generated initial buzz about the project and laid the groundwork for future milestone updates and promotional efforts in the community. Shared across the City’s stormwater social channels, educational content postings and project updates helped generate around 200 engagements and approximately 160 link clicks to project web resources in the first six months of the campaign’s launch. Strategic social media efforts also helped facilitate engagement with key partners, including Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary with an educational post for Estuaries Week.
